Stanley Gibbons's stamp shop was not the only mecca for nineteenth-century collectors, as Dr Adelene Buckland (English Department, King's College London) demonstrated at the 'Shows of London' seminar series on Monday night at King's (see http://showsoflondon.wordpress.com/). I had to enter the Mater Hospital in Dublin in 1956 when I was nine years old to receive medical treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). Although I was unaware of the deadly nature of this disease, I knew it was a serious matter to be hospitalised.

If you look across to the south side of the Strand, you can see the entrance to the original Strand Campus of King's College London.

The College was founded in 1829, and subsequently joined the University of London. The original entrance looked very different; it was a small, undemonstrative gateway off the busy nineteenth-century Strand.
For me, getting back to Fordham this past week has been surreal: not just because I'm a senior (when did that happen?), but also because it's been about nine months since I last set foot on campus. I spent my spring semester studying abroad in London. It was an experience that I'll never forget. Read more »
