Strand Shops (1953) - now demolished
The three buildings at the left hand end - 171-169 - are still there! (I'm writing from one of them.)
Note the dark entrance way to the right hand side (just to the left of the little cart, and under the fourth column of windows to the right. I think that is the entrance to the now blocked Strand Lane, running down past the 'Roman' bath and Surrey Steps to the Embankment.
The oldest houses in this row are the two lowest ones, just to the right of centre, numbers 165 and 164, which are already visible in the relevant plate from John Tallis's London Street Views, published circa 1840.
Accuracy!
Now I will change the title for this photograph, lest I confuse anyone. The hyperbole (leaving out the fact that Aldwych underground, 171-169 Strand are still standing) stems from the shock I felt when looking at photographs of this view before and after the Strand building was constructed. I really felt as if everything had disappeared!
The Tallis Street Views are beautiful aren't they? I hope to be able to scan them and add them as a 'strand' to the site at some point soon - unless of course you have them to hand that is?
I really must have a closer at the dark entrance you mention tomorrow! Thank you so much for drawing attention to it. It seems that you know the area very well - it would be fabulous to learn more about what you have seen from your front window!
