I had to enter the Mater Hospital in Dublin in 1956 when I was nine years old to receive medical treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). Although I was unaware of the deadly nature of this disease, I knew it was a serious matter to be hospitalised.

On 11th May 2012 I had the pleasure of interviewing Jim Fox for Strandlines. Jim first started working at King's on 19th January 1953 as an apprentice electrician, and retired in 1998 having been promoted to Site Engineer.

Australia House

I am a tired man.  my eyes are heavy but I am deep in thought.  I guard over Australia House.  Am I alive or dead ?
When I'm awake I look over the Aldwych towards the Royal Courts of Justice But I am not watching because Justice is in good hands.
In the traffic island there is the St Clement Dane Church which derives its name from the Danish Invaders in the 9th century.

Archives Afternoon, 23rd February 2011

Strandlines Archives afternoon brought together the various communities we are currently working with: The Connection, a homeless support centre at St Martins; Age UK Westminster; Peabody Wild Street Estate; and St Martins Older Congregation. Members of the recently formed Strandlines Cabinet of Artists also attended; also other interested individuals living/working in the Strand area. Whilst stories from the different communities are placed in close proximity on the website, it was wonderful to see the community realised in one room. Thank you to everyone who attended! ‘It’s not for us’, says Louise. Her sense of dissociation from the local area is shared by others at the Age Concern Day Centre in Covent Garden. During the afternoon I spent at the Centre last Wednesday, Louise, Stan, Alma, Jean and Antony remembered local stalls and shops - now lost: their view seems to be that the old places have been replaced or rebuilt to suit the interests of younger people and tourists; those with larger wallets and more expensive tastes. My Story About the Area

It is such an interesting area. I became familiar with part of it through worshipping at St. Martin's since 1946 when in London, and then regularly from 1952, and from working at 13 King Street from 1958 to the early 70s.   We used to joke that we should print on our letter heading a taxi address - Moss  Bros.
